Originally released in 1999, “Remembrances of What’s-Her-Face” was the first solo recording from Greg Thomas. Though he had appeared as a drummer on a number of other CDs by other artists, this five-song EP was a return to earlier roots as a vocalist and songsmith. Lyrically, Thomas’s songs weave tales of betrayal, seduction, and obsession. The title of the CD itself, “Remembrances of What’s-Her-Face,” suggests a theme of “love gone wrong” laced with some residual bitterness. “There’s a fair amount of sadness in the lyrics,” says Thomas, “but they’re not all sad songs. In fact, ‘Sanctuary’ is about looking forward and envisioning an idyllic life with another person.” Thomas wrote the music for “Remembrances” primarily on guitar, but he enlisted friends from the San Francisco area and beyond to handle all but the drums and lead vocals on the CD. “I love albums that reflect a few different musical personalities. Everyone playing on this album contributed something unique and really added to the final sound.” Thomas has played in a variety of groups in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 25 years, ranging from the New Orleans funk-rock group D’Amphibians to the fusion-y Rossbach, Thomas & Fabian. He currently resides in the middle of Ohio, where he continues to record solo albums, and he returns to California for band gigs.
