简介
Infused with rock/pop and alternative/folk elements, Austin’s debut Album, "The Other Side" at its heart is a collection of lyrics and melodies inspired by people and driven by story. Each song spurns from Austin’s own experiences as well as the unique individuals that have crossed his path and impacted his life over the last few years. From stories of success to failure, beauty to pain, heartbreak to bliss, "The Other Side" is like a pause of silence begging the listener to ask, observe and examine their own heart. Originally, 'The Other Side' was never meant to be released to the public. “I got with Brent to do a project to pitch to AR reps at the labels. But as we continued to dig deeper, I realized the songs could work as a compilation,” Adams reflects. Producer Brent Milligan shares his experience of working with Adams, "I love working with Austin. He has a fresh, unique take on things as a songwriter and a great melodic sense that makes him stand out in the crowd." Most of the songs were written in Atlanta the summer of 2009 when Adams was visiting his family. Fresh out of college and a relationship break up, he was doing some serious soul searching trying to figure out what to do with his life. Then it hit him—music. “I think that’s where 'Ordinary' came from. It really was a cry of desperation more than a song. I saw where I was going and thought there had to be more to life than just, well, living.” 'Ordinary' is different from the rest of the songs because of its transformation from preproduction to the final mix. It started more as hard hitting rock song that slowly made its way to being more of a hip hop infused pop anthem. 'Push and Shove' is the only co-write on the album. Written with good buddy Reed Pittman about a girl that was destroying her life by her own decisions, the song carries a constant tension that parallels her story with someone we may know in our individual lives that can be self destructive. At first, 'The Other Side' was not necessarily the first choice for the single. Adams shares, “…but I knew from the moment I started writing it that it was special.” He knew a girl in Nashville who had spent many years trying to make it in the music industry. She said between the sleepless nights and the endless days, it was wearing on her. But past all the politics and pageantry, something kept pushing her to keep going. “Maybe I saw a little bit of her story in mine and maybe all of us. So I decided to tell it,” says Adams. 'Lost Cause' and 'Let Her Loose' both came from the heartbreak of past relationships. One story being Adams', the other a friend’s. "Love always seems to be the world’s favorite subject to sing about, however in my case I always like some sort of light at the end of the tunnel. Whether it’s making comedic analogies about tying bowling balls to my feet and trying to swim or making some lasting decision to finally let a girl go, chances are there’s always a moral to it all," he shares. "The Other Side" at its center is really a project about perseverance and hope. So, no matter who you are, the end mark of where life is leading is hardly ever clear, but somewhere between hope and longing, trial and struggle there is a want and desire to discover potential and purpose in this world, not by what we are accomplishing but who we are becoming. “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” -Maya Angelou
