Billy Townes, Alchemy

As an artist and label owner, multi-faceted composer and keyboardist Billy Townes has always been a trailblazer – and on his latest masterful recording Alchemy, he once again sets the standard for what a freewheeling, creatively expansive independent contemporary jazz project can sound like in 2012, even as it draws on classic soul-jazz retro elements like wah-wah guitar, electric piano and Wurlitzer. Centered around his spirited, graceful and melodic grand piano, the collection offers something for everyone’s palette, from Calypso and Latin delights to cool funk, progressive Herbie-like jazz, cool R&B vocals and re-imaginings of “For The Love of U” and “Summertime.” It’s also a strong showcase for many of Townes’ longtime bandmates and some of the great musicians and vocalists (including longtime Townes associate Tony Mac) in the El Paso area. Alchemy is a term that conjures up ancient images of making magic out of organic material, and Townes delivers these golden goods in a big way. One of the best independent jazz releases of 2012.
