Chris Field’s new album, Personal Elegy, is a collection of sixteen songs, with a broad musical range; from light rock and Americana to uptempo rock jams to lyrical ballads. Stylistically, it's 70s era rock and soft rock, similar to Josh Rouse, Jackson Brown, Neil Young, Ben Folds, and ELO. Personal Elegy has an intimate singer songwriter approach. The title track is an elegy for things passed, for things that aren't there anymore, and is the heaviest rocking song on the album. A Safe Place To Hide is a quiet ballad about finding your own personal belief, in a world where so many claim to know the answers. Also there is Had It Comin, with its tip of the hat to Steely Dan’s Kings, as well as the sad and ambiguous story of the girl, Nola. Autograph is buoyantly reminiscent of ELO, complete with sixty piece string section. Field is a film composer, as well. Live Another Day is a quiet anthem for moving through the storm of life, while How Did We Get Here asks the question of how to regain love, before it’s too late. Taken together, the album is a complete work.
