简介
Mimi Naja is a member of a five-picee band called Fruition, which has three songwriters and lead vocalists. Her first solo album venture is a freeing experience to be the forefront writer and vocalist with room to take the songs anywhere she wants without the pressure of three-part harmonies having to fit, and the content or vibe to be approved by other singers. Not to say she could have ever made this record on her own. It was recorded at the warehouse space of Joshua Simon, who provides pulsing, grounding bass on the record, as well as Hammond organ and a dabble of guitar, while providing great ears and supportive input for arrangements and dynamics. Tyler Thompson is the engineer who made it all come together and laid down the grunt work, a one-man recording studio machine, on top of playing drums and percussion on the entire album, and having a hand in song arrangement. These three multi-instrumentalists came together with a vague plan and just to have fun and see what happened, and couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of this record. Tracks like "Take Me Downtown", "Rail-Riding Mamas", and "Paper Bag" have the folk elements that Naja first became comfortable performing; "Baby I'm Ready" and "Like A Drug" provide space for the classic and nu-soul vibe to come through, and "I Wish You Well" and "Ain't It Just Too Bad" fulfill the rock desires of the band. While some may find the collection to be sporadic, others will definitely find it well-rounded, and all rooted in the same vein of having a good groove, honest lyrics, comfortable and familiar melodies, and mindful dynamics. This album is for the music lover that prefers not to settle into a single genre.
