简介

Viento de Agua plays bomba and plena, two genres of traditional Puerto Rican music that derive from African forms. Bomba, the oldest of the two, has been played and sung for more than 400 years. Plena developed a little over a century ago in the Island's urban barrios. Viento de Agua's sound layers horns, woodwinds and other contemporary instrumentation over the classic drums that drive the music: "barriles" or bomba barrels, a type of floor drums, smaller in height than a conga but bigger in diameter and "panderetas" or hand held drums used for plena. Fruta Madura is the result of many years practicing and reinventing bomba and plena. Ciudadano del Mundo, the first track on the album, was written and arranged by musical director Ricardo Pons, and singers Jerry Medina and Cubans Gema and Pavel, appear as guest artists. In Lola, written by Tito Matos, Puerto Rican saxophonist, Miguel Zenón, plays a solo. Director Tito Matos is a lifelong practitioner of bomba and plena, well known for his stylistic innovations as well as his respect for their traditions. He specializes in the "requinto" the hand held drum that improvises constantly in plena and he also plays the "barriles" or bomba barrels. He has been invited to add plena sounds to recordings of many different genres that range from jazz musicians David Sánchez and Miguel Zenón to pop star Ricky Martin. Composer Ricardo Pons plays the flute and saxophone, among other instruments. The two joined forces more than a decade ago in New York City, and they are now reunited in Puerto Rico to continue their goal of moving bomba and plena forward into a new century. Viento de Agua has a previous album, De Puerto Rico al Mundo.
