"Timothy Leary Spoke to Me in a Dream Capsule" is a unique album unto itself mainly because of the fact that Martian Colours reverted back to lower fidelity recording techniques on their second album. In most cases, bands strive for a more produced sound as they progress. Instead, Martian Colours decide to move out of the studio and into various basements to capture a truly untainted sound. The first five tracks harken back to the sounds of post-punk dusted with hints of grunge and experimental post-rock. The poetic lyrics indicate social commentary without being entirely blatant. Abstract concepts are mixed in with traditional and autobiographical vocals, thus creating a message that leaves the listener to his/her own devices of interpretation. While the provoking lyrics speak to the listener, grinding guitars ebb and flow between the dark baselines and catchy drum beats. As for the rest of the album, we are taken down a more instrumental and experimental path. The main writer of this album, Sean Gramuglia, claims that he draws much inspiration from David Bowie's Berlin period for this approach. To those of you unfamiliar with this period of music, the first side of Bowie's album(s) would consist of more radio friendly songs, while the second side would consist of soundscapes and instrumental pieces. Some of the Martian Colours' songs on this portion of the album provide a surreal and dreamlike sound. Other songs, such as the Lilith's Lament (1-5), are laden with 12-string guitars and unrefined drums. Coming full circle back to the recording of this album, the one thing that truly draws the listener in is the tonality of the instrument and vocal tracks. Instead of relying on expensive mixing boards and engineers, Martian Colours decided to employ the use of a single quality microphone and Garageband. This way, the sounds could be recorded without the need of tampering. The fact that truly speaks to the craftsmanship of this album is the fact that no annoying pops or hisses can be heard, which are usually characteristic of low-fi recordings. Granted, the truly anal music buff will be able to pick out small imperfections. In reality, these small imperfections are what make this album so passionate. Speaking of passion, this is exactly what separates this album from many others. When one listens to this album, he or she can feel the emotions being conveyed by the musicians. Overall, this album offers unique sounds and tonality mixed with abstract and meaningful lyrics that will truly impact the listener.
