For Square is the fully-instrumental, third CD from Houston’s Solar Wind and features the funky bass playing of the band’s newest member, Keith Vivens, one of Houston’s finest bassists. The CD starts with a Mike Brown original “Four Miles to Missouri”, an obvious tip-of-the-hat to Pat Metheny featuring a soulful Fender Rhodes solo from guest artist Gilbert Sedeno, whose credits include touring with Willie Nelson, Ray Price and Houston jazz legend Bubbha Thomas. “Set it and Forget It” is a funky jazz Paul Conroy original featuring some amazing interplay between bass clarinet and electric bass, as well as a Scofield-like solo from Mike Brown. The title track is a hip, syncopated Mike Brown original which shows off Mark Kinnear’s unique drum style and features a kick-a** bass solo from Keith Vivens. “Introspective Warrior” is another Mike Brown original that is right out of the Steve Vai playbook, telling the story (without words) of a soldier shipped off to a strange land and experiencing a battlefield scene before returning to introspection. “In September” is a Paul Conroy original ballad that takes musical twists and turns that display the depth of Conroy’s writing and musical ability. “Nitti Gritti”, a Mark Kinnear original, is a nod to bass virtuoso Adam Nitti and features several different time signatures and an other-worldly bass solo from Keith Vivens. “Simone” is a Frank Foster standard with a unique and original arrangement by Paul Conroy featuring once again Gilbert Sedeno on Fender Rhodes. The CD wraps up with Kemah Rita, a contemporary jazz style original written by Keith Vivens and featuring solos from each member of the band. The CD manages to be unique and original while staying true to its roots of modern jazz-rock fusion and progressive rock.
