On a Sunday morning in May of 2008, Mark Hundevad and Glen Charles Halls walked into a studio in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and recorded 16 improvised compositions in a single non-stop three hour session. There was no prior discussion or plan or any sort, as this was free jazz improvisation in its purest form. Mark Hundevad performs on drum set, Trinidad drums and percussion, and vibraphone, while Glen Charles Halls play piano, hand drums and auxiliary percussion, and Peruvian flute. Eight of those compositions are presented in “Visions of the Bear" and remain largely intact from the original session. The album presents a surprisingly broad range of stylistic nuances, ranging from chordal/harmonic ballads, to hard-edged free-form jazz, to pure rhythm and sound textures, to Native-American and world-music influenced numbers. The musicianship is of the highest order and one seldom hears this degree of almost 'psychic' connection between two improvising musicians.
