简介

I realised the other day that I have been playing the saxophone and making music for over thirty five years now. How time flies when you're having fun! Each CD I've created has had it's own character and this one is no exception. It has soul, humour, humanity and truly reflects my Caribbean home. Each song on this album has been a labour of love. A personal expression that over time took on a life of it's own. The opening track – 'The boys of summer' with it's driving almost rock-star opening, leading to a determined 6/8 melody and wistful improvisation that twists back to a driving conclusion. 'One of our beats is missing' originally an experiment in a 5/4 beguine rhythm from Martinique that instead became driving 5/4 latin with a mood worthy of a spy movie. The title track 'Fix it on Monday' (– could this become the rallying cry of procrastinators everywhere?) with it's infectious dub groove and simple, yet memorable tune this piece gave all the performers license to stretch out and have some fun... 'Overcast conditions' – a haunting melody played on flute over a traditional Creole rhythm from the French West Indies. 'Carnival for Liam' a very Caribbean tune that captures the joy and laid back vibe of Barbados. 'Life as we know it', Caribbean jazz in it's purest form. A melody that takes us to the roots of calypso while invoking ever present jazz harmonies. 'The out crowd' – groovy reggae, groovy reggae, groovy reggae. Then there's the ball-buster. The song that all of the musicians on this session including it's humble composer quickly came to respect. One false move and ... it's a 'Trane wreck'. A swing tune in a more traditional style with a big tip of the hat to the genius of saxophonist John Coltrane. And finally there's 'Matinik 3'. The recording of this soulful and moving ballad was made during a rehearsal and though the ensemble tried and tried, the powerful magic of this version was never reached again. So here it is. Fix it on Monday. Recorded live in my wife's ballet studio along with three of Barbados' best jazz musicians who came and gave it their all. Drummer David Burnett, a quiet man with huge talent and sound. Richard Evans, who is always striving to get the most out of his bass and Pianist Stefan Walcott cheerfully bringing shades of Theolonius Monk to the Caribbean. Engineered by Neal Newton, mixed by yours truly and mastered by the world renowned mastering engineer Bob Katz of Digital Domain, this album is full of heart and soul, hard work and laughter, and if there are any defects, well, we'll fix it on Monday.
