简介
The Grandsons' second record continued to mine the vein of tongue in cheek innocence and sincere irreverence – so much so that it’s like they invented it. "It's Hip to Flip" was produced by DC cultural linchpin Mark Noone (Slickee Boys, Hula Monsters) and recorded at Arlington’s fabled Inner Ear studios by Don Zientara. Released in 1994 on the band's own Whirling House Records label, this recording features staples of the band's live shows such as, "What Mary Doesn't Know," "Yodel Your Blues Away," "It Works For Me," "Zulu Queen," and six other tunes. The record leaps out of the gate with “What Mary Doesn’t Know” – a bouncy rollicker with a nifty repeating riff, a sweetly ringing guitar solo and an urgent sax break. “Breaking Your Family Rules” is the mafia hit that shoulda been – fans of the Sopranos need to check it out. Bonus live tracks included on the digital release - from shows at Ashland Coffee and Tea (Ashland, VA) and the Barns of Wolf Trap (Vienna, VA). Grandsons alumni Jon Danforth and Rick Jordan play drums and bass (respectively) on the record; Diana Keene again provides pedal steel guitar, Carol Arthur plays steel drums on one of Jon's tunes, and Susan Lowell sings harmonies on two of her tunes that we included on this disc. Acclaimed saxophonist and deejay Derek Huston has the best description of the Grandsons and “It’s Hip to Flip”: “There is no other rock and roll band like the Grandsons. Their music is an irresistible mix of melody, mambo and muleskinner blues. The Grandsons take the music of this crazy, mixed-up world and turn out a sound that will make you glad the world can be that way. Play this platter and you will understand why it’s hip to flip with Grandsons. It works for me.”
