Pedro el Poeta is an award-winning Hip-Hop, Spoken Word, and freestyle artist, an activist, a proud father of two, a teacher, and an Eckerd College graduate with a B.A. in Creative Writing. Born during the civil war in Nicaragua, Pedro immigrated to the U.S., becoming a political refugee at the age of six, and grew up in the Washington D.C. area. He has been performing from an early age, and since moving to St. Petersburg, FL in 2001, he has racked up a long list of accomplishments, including: Getting named 2014 Tampa Bay Artist of the Year at the 2014 Tampa Bay Regional Talkie Awards; Being an honorary speaker at TEDx Tampa Bay 2011; Performing the entire soundtrack to the internationally acclaimed, award-winning short film, "Torn Asunder;" Acting in and composing the soundtrack to the full length film, "Southsyde;" Getting featured in the documentary, "Hip-Hop! Remember Me?"; Opening for legendary icons like Cypress Hill, Everclear, Method Man & Redman; Opening for other national acts like Tom Morello, George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelics, Black Uhuru, and Russell Simmon's Def Poetry Jam on Broadway; As well as many other accomplishments. He has also produced four albums, including “the Street Reporter EP,” which was executive produced by Lance Quinn (Bon Jovi, Talking Heads, etc.). Aside from his lucrative music career, el Poeta has been working with, mentoring, and teaching at-risk youth in the Tampa Bay area for over ten years. He is a highly motivated, passionate, and devoted English and Art History teacher. With a style all his own, filled with witty lyricism, explosive energy, great sense of timing, and a powerful stage presence, this internationally acclaimed Hip-Hop Poet is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the scene.
