After being absent for a decade they released a live album in 1999 entitled 'Wide Open' and after another seven long years finally the new studio album of Leatherwolf named 'World Asylum' has seen the light of day. There have been some line-up changes compared to seven years ago though. So has singer/guitarist Michael Olivieri been replaced by ex-Crimson Glory vocalist Wade Black and they have found new members in Eric Halpern (ex-Destiny's End) and Pete Perez (ex-Riot) to replace Carey Howe and Paul Carmen respectively. Those of you who have been paying attention have noted that only guitarist Geoff Gayer and drummer Dean Roberts have remained in the band. The typical Leatherwolf sound however has not changed and that's of course very good news! Leatherwolf was in the mid eighties responsible for releasing a truly magnificent debut album followed by two slightly more melodic records, of which I still think 'Street Ready' is fantastic as well. The new record 'World Asylum' is stylistically more in the vein of the debut record and has proven to be a lot heavier than I expected beforehand. Opening track 'I Am The Law' is the perfect starter, in which Wade Black's vocals remind me very much of the voice of Michael Olivieri and which is traditionally dominated by the many guitar solos. Also the next songs 'King Of The Ward' and (especially) 'Behind The Gun' are just outstanding and that accounts for more or less the complete album. The only song which I think is not as good is the more experimental 'Institutions'. In the eighties I saw Leatherwolf as a band who had everything to really make it in the music business. Unfortunately due to several circumstances this didn't quite happen. Maybe that they are granted a second chance with this 'World Asylum' record. For me personally this record has proven to be the best album I listened to this month. Welcome back, guys! - Sjak Roks, Lords of Metal
