简介
In 2006 do not expect to see the new heroes of the spaghetti western galloping over tinted purple fields; instead todays heroes ride their monster dub through the urban jungle of the 21st century. And if youre expecting the Swiss asphalt cowboys to deliver syrupy country tunes, then hit the off pronto and youll find what youre looking for between space echo and plate reverb at the drop on 3. Like their celluloid namesakes, Dub Spencer & Trance Hill roll into town armed with heavy reggae grooves and space electro sounds, all carried by pumping bass lines that almost hypnotically clear the path top the centre and gently caress your innards. DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL play laid-back, instrumental, almost psychedelic reggae. And they play it with virtuosity, with washed-out grooves, breaks, hints of other tracks and all so thrillingly slooooow that theyre sure to lose any shoot-out. What is usually done in the mix is actually played live by this virtuoso trio. But its not about muso showing off the music here flows from other sources! Shuffling drums, warm bass lines. And holes in exactly the right places, gentle backbeat piano and lots and lots of echo. What makes it all the better is how DUB SPENCER & TRANCE HILL use these guidelines for wild, wild rides. This is the kind of music for the opening scene in Once Upon A Time, in which a badly shaven guy lethargically fights with an annoying fly. If it wasnt for a certain impishness the causal pleasure taken from having a great idea or riff. You could easily compare Dub Spencer & Trance Hill with Scorn meets King Tubby meets Joshua Redman; their live gigs make lavish use of effects but not a playback track in sight. The grass stops growing when these Swiss lads start dubbing. You leave their gigs in a pleasant state of wonderment the souls of those who took the trip groove on home in a deep sense of relaxation a sound experience which is rated highly addictive. Ten years ago, the three met at the College of Music in Lucerne. During their college days they shared the stage on many occasions in a variety of different bands: Niederer and Stalder, for instance, toured with their New York-based compatriot Daniel Schnyder, while Pflugshaupt and Stalder did the international jazz festivals with their electro-fusion band KUBUS, sharing a stage with Living Colour and Kroyt. Adrian Pflugshaupt spend a year at college in Manhattan at the New School; after returning home he was lauded by the press as one of the most promising new jazz musicians in Switzerland. He has played all around the world with great musicians, including Django Bates, George Gruntz and the Gil Evans Orchestra. Even ageing German crooner Udo Jürgens hired him to play in his orchestra for a tour. Next to the saxophone and jazz, Pflugshaupt has always been interested in electronic music. He is an avid computer freak and programs plug-ins for major music software companies. Christian Niederer got deeper into jazz with New Yorks Drummers Collective. Later he focused more on groove music, like funk and R&B, touring Europe with Funky Brotherhood and The Clients. He never turned his back on jazz, though: as composer and band leader of Tré he recently got offered a record deal by the German jazz magazine Jazz thing. After completing his studies Marcel Stalders musical education was broad: he played bass on the Swiss hip-hop crew Wrecked Mobs studio album, played lots of open air festival with Ivos band and released a critically acclaimed debut album with the jazz group Gruppe 6. His heart still belongs to dub, though.
