BREVARD LIVE MAGAZINE NOVEMBER 2002: Florida CD's in Review by Chris Long After listening to the first two tracks of this record I thought it was gonna be just another garden variety "this Bud's for you" local blues CD. How wrong I was! I thought Black Eyed Soul was the only band 'round these parts doing "roots" music, but Slick Willie has got mandolins, dobros, and pedal steel all over this record. Having said that, it should come as no surprise to the band that "Old Sneaks" and "Roots and Wings" were my two favorite tracks. Although only 11 songs are listed on the cover, track #12 (the mystery bonus cut) is a much more traditional country/roots version of track #3, "Old Sneaks". Both are great versions, however I preferred #12. As I mentioned at the beginning, songs like "something You Know", "Bad Example", "Clean Up Aisle #4", and "Spankin the Plank" are classic upbeat rockin' blues numbers, while songs like "With Your Mind" and "Perception of Reality" have sort of a "Van Morrison" feel. At times some of the music and vocals remind me a lot of Asleep At The Wheel (I hope people know what that means) which is definitely a VERY good thing... It will be interesting to see where this record ranks on the ole year end Top Ten list in this column next month. BREVARD LIVE MAGAZINE December 2002: Florida CD's: The Top Ten of 2002 by Chris Long #8 SLICK WILLIE - Spankin' The Plank 12 song CD: One of very few groups to be playing this kind of roots & blues based music.
