The 2nd installment of the Rough Materials series finally emerges. Being little over a year since the first was put out as the inaugural RGD offering - we once again return with that rough african deepness. This time the roots go deeper with 5 new names making their debut on RGD - Hand picked & recruited by the label heads to further perpetuate the ethos of Roots Go Deep. Kicking off the 5th offering is the Joburg based trio Ground Wires Ensemble. The trio is made up of Khotso Mothoko, Sanele Tsotetsi & Sifiso Nkosi. They debut with the impressive 'Lake Tana', a dubbed out groove rolling on a smooth aural template - painted with a dark mood. 17 year old Thando Msiza based in the Coal City brings his strong matured slow burner - a sound way beyond his age. 'Paradigm Shift" is a visceral deep techno work out immersed with a murky old school tint. Another Coal City native, Tebogo Mailula has been behind the scenes with the RGD movement since the beginning. He finally emerges with his hypnotic 'River Trance Dance', revealing lush evolving textures that beautifully compliment the heavy african styled percussion, pushing the deep mandate forward. Tebatso Blue Malapile better known as being one part of the Blue & K-White act based in Limpopo, comes out on his own here with a fresh new direction to his style. 'Back To Back' is a disco infused deep hybrid with all elements twisted and expertly interwoven in an upbeat feral structure. The EP closes off with another Joburg based artist. So-Pitch shows off with his nu jazz debut. Drenched in a hip-hop-styled class - 'Lurk' is a smoky cavernous brew that immerses you in a melancholic deepness, perfectly rounding off a fine release.
