Samantha Farrell is a sparkling young singer-songwriter who is creating her own buzz on the LA music scene. Celebrating classic singer-songwriter’s in the tradition of Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor, her unique and smoky voice, urgent and catchy melodies, expressive, accessible lyrics and powerful acoustic guitar are making people stop and take note. Samantha spent her childhood running barefoot through open fields of daisies. Literally. The daughter of an Irish-American father and Black-American mother, she was raised on a farm in rural Massachusetts where music was a constant part of the colorful fabric of her life. Thanks to her parents' eclectic and impeccable tastes in music, she was influenced early on by old school jazz, R&B, and soul as well as classic singer-songwriters. Encouraged from a young age to pursue music and any form of self-expression, by fourth grade she had become a published poet and had picked up the flute. By high school, she was composing music and moonlighting in the jazz band where she quickly learned alto sax. By the end of high school she was awarded the Louis Armstrong National Jazz Award and could play ten instruments (self taught on nine.) Her singing voice gradually emerged and developed its own soulful and smoky quality as she sought to emulate her songstress heroes, Ella, Aretha and Billie. By sophomore year in college her fingers were itching to put her own words to music, so she decided it was time to learn the guitar. Two weeks later she performed her first original songs in front of an audience of 250 at Bowdoin College. After that hair-raising and highly successful event, Samantha quickly became a fixture and a favorite on the New England college scene, playing to packed houses for the next two years. Upon graduation with distinction, she decided to go for the dream and head to LA where she would pack away her hard-earned degree and work menial tasks to support herself while she played at night. Within a few months, she began headlining at popular LA hotspots such as The Mint, The Room 5 Lounge, Tangier’s, and The Roxy VIP Room. By August of 2006 she had hustled up enough money to book four studio days at the famous 4th Street Recording Studio in Santa Monica. Along with the help of some extremely talented musicians she met through extremely random circumstances, she was able to mix and record her entire 11-song album in four days. Featuring rhythm guitar, bass, upright bass, drums, piano, Hammond organ and cello, the end result is an astonishing and subtle piece of work that was self produced, arranged and written. Described as “acoustic soul funk folk,” by Samantha, the album "Spiritus," is already garnering rave reviews from both local and national musical sources and has already won fans from across the globe.
