In this medieval universe of exclusion and repression, where women remain invisible and the Gypsies marginalized, the state religion condemns the so-called pagan world with its earth spirits and animal energies. Quasimodo, the great rescuer, breaks open the brittle shell of an all-controlling society. Victor Hugo takes on the Church. He takes on the class system. He takes on the idea that reason is everything. His story strikes a blow for the transforming power of love. Almost all previous attempts to tell this story on stage have avoided its central issues and sugar-coated the tragic ending. When the story is told as Hugo wrote it, its power is cathartic and ultimately triumphant. PRODUCTION notes A grand production akin to Les Mis meets Cirque Du Soleil is possible but a smaller one unit set version with ten actors is also feasible. Off-Broadway. Think “The Fantasticks.” For the few crowd scenes, special effects: masks; slide projections; puppetry; pop-ups; photographs; holographs; film/video. The intent: to tell this sprawling, multi-layered tale in two hours onstage. THE STORY The Archdeacon of the Cathedral of Notre Dame, Paris, 1482, is so obsessed with the Gypsy dancer, Esmeralda, that he brings about her execution as a witch when she rejects him. His foster son, Quasimodo, the bell ringer at the Cathedral, manages to save Esmeralda once, but is ultimately overpowered by the King’s guards, and in that struggle murders the man he had once revered. Throughout, the Gypsies provide passion, humor, and dance. What makes the story work; indeed, what makes it central to world literature is its celebration of love as the ultimate power we have. THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME has had several readings and was part of the York Theater reading series. Hal Hackady (Lyricist) is renowned though out the world as an American lyricist, librettist and screenwriter. Early in his career he wrote several episodes for ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS and many of the rock and roll period movies like HEY, LET’S TWIST with stars Annette Funicello and Elvis Presley, etc. However his real claim to fame came from his work as a lyricist in the Broadway theatre. He is best known for his lyrics for Snoopy!!! The Musical, a sequel to You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, Goodtime Charley, Teddy & Alice, Ambassador and Minnie’s Boys for which the song, Mama, A Rainbow, was written and has since become a cabaret standard. Oddly enough, many people don’t know that all New York Mets fans are familiar with his lyrics for “LETS GO METS”, the team’s theme song. Tony Scully (Libretto) A graduate of Boston College and the Yale School of Drama, the Washington DC native has seen his plays produced by The Yale Repertory Company (The Great Chinese Revolution), The Manhattan Theatre Club (All Through the House), on Broadway at The Vivian Beaumont Theatre, Lincoln Center (Little Black Sheep), WestBeth Theatre Center, NYC (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), and a touring comedy, Dracula, King of the Night. He has had many new plays at small theatres, principally in Los Angeles. He has also worked in street theatre in Washington, DC and New Haven, CT; he has lectured at Yale, the School of Visual Arts, NYC, the University of Rochester and Jersey City State College. For five years Scully served as Co-Director, Woodstock Center for Religion and Worship, New York City, conducting public forums with anthropologists, sociologists and psychiatrists to explore interconnection between social sciences, art and religion. For three years he worked as the Executive Administrator, The Institute for Innocence, Los Angeles, CA. The foundation dealt with long-term effects of political oppression and colonization on successive generations of target populations. With producer, Sandy Faison, he also co-wrote a libretto chronicling the history of American music for the L.A. Children’s Chorus, Los Angeles. In Hollywood, aside from writing for television and working with various production companies, he was board member of the Humanitas Prize. Since moving to Camden in 2005, he has served on the boards of Historic Camden, the Upton Trio and the Columbia Children’s Theatre. In November 2012 he was elected Mayor of Camden, South Carolina, “the Steeplechase Capital of the World.” Victor Marie Hugo (Novelist) (French pronunciation: [viktɔʁ maʁi yɡo]; 26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best known French writers. In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831 (known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame). Joe Gianono (Composer) Mr. Gianono’s music can be heard as the episode theme music for “The Soup” (E! Entertainment), as well as on “Chelsea Lately” (E!), “Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers”(Disney) and “Fatal Honeymoons” (E!), etc. and feature film, “SOMEBODY MARRY ME”. Joe is the resident composer of the White Horse Theater Company and has composed incidental music for ”The Rose Tatoo”, “Little Eyolf”, “Savannah Black & Blue”, "Small Craft Warnings", "In the Bar Of A Tokyo Hotel", “The Book Of Lambert”, “Clothes For A Summer Hotel”, “’Night Mother” and “Suddenly Last Summer”. He is also the composer of the musical adaptation of “The Hunchback Of Notre Dame”, performed at the York Theater in NYC, with lyrics by Hal Hackady and libretto by Tony Scully. As an arranger/ orchestrator for over 30 years in every venue, he has work for many of the world’s finest orchestras and artists including the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Paul Taylor Dance, Company, PM Dawn, Philip Bailey, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chita Rivera, Michel Camilo, Bucky Pizzarelli and over 30 Broadway & regional musicals. Recent and up coming publications include Trois Jimnopedies for Flute and Guitar, TNT for Chorus and Piano and Elegy for solo Cello and String Orchestra published by Subito Music. He is an ASCAP and BMI member and is also published by ACM Records, Subito Music and Joe Gianono Music Publishing. Mr. Gianono has recently started his own record label that is primarily dedicated to popular music. SMALL CRAFT WARNINGS, performed by Luellen Abdoo and Elaine Chelton, has been on "EXPLORING MUSIC" hosted by Bill McGlaughlin on WQXR (105.9 FM) and it’s nationwide affiliates. Recent projects include "A TROLL IN TH PARK", a piece for Solo Violin and "Incidental Music" for the White Horse Theater Company production of the play, I CAN'T IMAGINE TOMORROW by Tennessee Williams, directed by Cyndy Marion. He is also in the process of completing a choral work titled "SPATIAL QUANTUM" for large choir, organ, 6 brass, 6, winds, 6 percussion, low strings and pre-recorded soundscape which is dedicated to the memory of the crew of the space shuttle "CHALLENGER". The upcoming publication of his “ELEGY for Solo Cello and String Orchestra” will be available from Subito Music Publishing later this year. Much of Mr. Gianono’s efforts are spent writing, producing and recording songs for his record label. All of which can be found on Cdbaby, iTunes and all other major digital music distributors. He recently returned from Nashville, where he recorded his song “SILLY GIRL” with the up and coming vocalist, Brandon Maddox and the Reba McEntire band. One of his favorite project’s is a Christmas song called S.A.N.T.A. Dot Com, a song for kids, young and old, who still believe in Santa Claus in this new computer era. The lyrics were written by renowned lyricist, Hal Hackady. S.A.N.T.A. Dot Com was recorded by Kara Oates, 13 year old star of Broadway’s Mary Poppins and Billy Elliot. It was also recorded in London by Laurence Kilsby, called “the finest boy soprano in the UK” by the BBC. There is also a duet version with both Kara and Laurence. At the moment Mr. Gianono is in the process of completing the recording of “I LIKE GREEN”, an environmental song about being “green” in urban areas, like NYC. BTW- by the time he got to Woodstock, Joe was a respectable Rock n’ Roll guitar player.
