"Rarely do you listen to the first track of an album, let alone a debut EP, and simply think ‘yes’. Anna O’s first track, 'Sleepless' from When the Winter Came feels different to other female solo artists in the current environment, but doesn’t rely on this point of difference. In fact it’s hard to pin point exactly what the difference is, which in itself naturally steers the sound away from being a novelty or pigeon-holed. Anna gradually builds layers of gently reverbed keys and echoing vocal loops, to achieve a vast wall of sound yet balanced enough not to outweigh the melodies she ribbons through the track. Simply, yes. ..Reminiscent of Dido’s Life for Rent, purely in terms of the diverse offerings on the recording, this is an absolute gem of a discovery. About as polished as a recording can be without losing the grit which Anna O occasionally brings to the table, When the Winter Came could not be more exciting. We can only hope that she leans on her raw talent in future recordings as opposed to the glitz of a commercial sound. 2014 will have to be something quite special to knock 'Sleepless' out of the top ten tracks of the year.
