Produced by SELF (Solar Electric Light Fund), this short documentary describes the excellent work that this progressive non-profit organization is doing in bringing clean renewable energy to children in South Africa. This short, peppy composition emulates many of the rhythmic elements associated with African percussion and the rustic tone of folk instruments like the mbira. This unique tone is produced from a conventional acoustic piano by placing cardboard on the strings. Composed 7 days after Sept 11/2001, Horvat used the piece as his own personal means to come to grips with what had happened. In it, he deals with an inner debate on whether he should feel optimistic or pessimistic about society's future. The usage of a calm tempo with a pulsating beat, along with the Tremolo Rhodes (from a Roland JV-1080 Synthesizer), underlays how this event has had a surreal and numbing effect on his psyche. Poverty is based on the sobering statistic that "Every THREE seconds a child dies of poverty on this planet." The metre and mood is a reflection of this Earth Hour is a 60-minute continuous composition inspired by and best experienced in the dark. Divided into twelve sections, it is dedicated to the international event that takes place on the last Saturday of every March. 25% of the proceeds from the sale of this CD go to WWF-Canada (World Wildlife Fund).
