‘Great Man of the Sea’ is a song that very much comes from the heart and is a tribute to legendary New Zealand sailor Sir Peter Blake. As a young boy sailing at his local yacht club, Sir Peter was a tremendously inspirational Kiwi hero of Andrew’s, as he was for many New Zealanders. Much of the song is based on his personal experience and feelings during his younger years, especially while out on Auckland Harbour amongst the myriad of spectator craft watching the Whitbread Round the World yachts departing in December 1981.
