As Doc Manny, hawaiian dreamer crafts intimate miniatures, one that updates classic '80s pop but removes its most joyous excesses and replaces them with a modern, electronically-led wistfulness and then slowly drowns them in oceans of Swing & Strut. As short patterns of chords or intervals revolve hypnotically, overlapping layers of Swag and electric piano well up around them until only the tips of the keyed notes glint out. The music lands somewhere between this balance of cool circumspection and human warmth is just one of the deep contrasts churning his music's simple surface. It's impossible to decide whether the music is constantly changing or totally still, a strangely placid kind of tension that never fails to draw you in. the Jeff Dougler & Balu remix is a tempo-bending cut with aged swing and funky guitars, weaving spider-like rhythms with spunk grooving about like rhinoceros shaped earrings and tea drinking.
