The third album by the Wrigley Sisters recorded in 1994 The Wrigley Sisters from Orkney are the latest addition to Edinburgh's thriving and increasingly youthful traditional and roots music scene. As a duo, they personify what's has been happening to Scots music over the last decade, as accompaniment has gained a more equal standing with melody, while cross rhythm and syncopation are featured as much in tune playing as the chords. Jennifer (fiddle) and Hazel (guitar/piano) are both intensely strong players, and cover the various style of traditional and pipe music with ease. But here too are the bitter sweet moods of contemporary Irish music, and the fierce dance rhythms of Cape Breton. The Wrigley Sisters music is wide-ranging and constantly gaining in inventiveness, humour, and sheer damned swinginess. There are many families who have produced more than one excellent fiddler, singer, or piper. But for a familly to have spawned a a superb melodist and a matchless accompanist on the same day, both of them fired with a shared feeling for the music and its meaning, - that, my friends, is a rare and splendid thing.
