简介
Favourites of the Neo-Psychedelic boom, counting the legendary John Peel and Tony Wilson among their fans, The Chemistry Set follow up their stunning mini-lp, “Alchemy101" with a special extended club mix single. "She's Taking Me Down", was remixed by top European DJ "Gato" and is released on the ultra cool Barcelona “Tsunami music” label (released on 28 September 2009). Paul Lake and Dave Mclean ended The Chemistry Set’s long silence by returning to the studio last year to record brand-spankin’ new material. It was well worth the effort as “Alchemy#101” received dozens of rave reviews all over the globe and radio play across Europe and America. They were initially egged on, in part, by renewed interest in their 1989 never released album, "Sounds Like Painting", the overwhelmingly positive response to new demos posted on their myspace page and a deluge of messages from old and new fans (including legendary US producer/arranger/songwriter David Axelrod and Nelson Bragg of The Brian Wilson Band). The duo continues the special relationship forged with fans and artists in Spain since the late 80s, so it’s no surprise that both “Alchemy#101” and new single have been made with major contributions from the Spanish music and artistic communities. Barcelona DJ “Gato” has shared the cabin and studio with Grandmaster Flash, Peter Hook, The Propellerheads, Norman Cook, The Chemical Brothers and dozens more DJ’s and musicians over the past decade and a half. He has DJ’ed at all of the top festivals in Europe, including regular slots at the biggest - “Festival Internacional Benicassim” (FIB). Gato’s interest in The Chemistry Set began back in 1990, when as a 14 year old he bought their “Don’t Turn Away” 12” single (top 20 National Spain, top 20 indie UK). "Since I discovered The Chemistry Set's "Don't Turn Away" when I was fourteen, it became one of my favourite songs. I've danced to that tune more times than I can remember, and it's still in my all-time top ten. I can't even begin to explain how grateful I am to be able to work with them these days; their new songs are the best they've done so far, but even more important is what the new stuff means; that the Chemistry Set is back!" The remix made its debut at the FIB in Benicassim in July and advance copies are already being played by indie-DJ's all over the Mediterranean. Gato and his team spent six months on this labour of love. The full-length remix is 7 minutes and 14 seconds (the radio edit is 3.30) of stunning Psychedelic Groove. Beginning with a backwards 12 string Rickenbacker loop and hypnotic vocals, the momentum builds with silky harmonies before the woofer-wobbling bass and huge drums come in to shake you out of your trance! It reaches a crescendo with tremolo guitars, fuzzed-up farfisas and piano, before gently laying you back down to prepare for another trip to the zenith of this sonic rollercoaster. The remix will come with three limited edition sleeves, with two of the sleeves designed by Spain’s acclaimed graphic artist, Blanca Viñas (who also created the artwork for “Alchemy#101”). STOP PRESS NEWS DJ Gato is going to remix more songs to allow The Chemistry Set and the Gato team to perform live at European festivals and clubs next year. Accompanying the Electronic-Psychedelic show will be a brilliant VJ from Barcelona “Matrona” (whose visuals and installations have been on display in clubs and galleries in NYC, London, Barcelona and Buenos Aires). This promises to be quite a show. Soundbites: "The new remix of London’s perennial psych-pop favourites The Chemistry Set's ace "She's Taking Me Down" by Barcelona DJ “Gato” starts with a slab of another perennial fave: the backwards guitar, continues with a little bit of a "Taxman" groove followed by tremolo guitars, farfisas and rarely lets go during seven minutes and fourteen seconds of what can only be described as a "helter skelter psychedelic dance treasure trove". DJ Gato had done a wonderful job in appealing to both the Psychedelic and the indie-dance audience. Enhorabueno mucho Senor Gato!!" Ettnollett mag (Sweden) “When it comes to solid gold songwriting with an in depth 1-2 psychedelic punch, no one does it better than The Chemistry Set. Just listening to them is like a shot of transcendental bliss. Go out and discover this goldmine today!” Plastique-Pop (US) “The Chemistry Set is a f*cking great band!” Clint Boon (Inspiral Carpets) "Real music!!! Goddamn...finally music that makes you think, and really listen to!" Producer David Axelrod “Someone once told me that great songs have no date stamp, and (The Chemistry Set) understood perfectly.” David Cavanagh, Rock Critic (UK) “This EP is amazing! Each time we play them on our radio show, the phones light up with listeners, asking where they can find their music.” Randy Shone, Psychedelic Velveeta (US) “Just been listening to the songs on your site…bloody fantastic…” Danny Watson, Death Disco (UK) “This UK band gets lots of props for doing psyche pop the right way” Powerpopaholic (US) “(Alchemy#101) is their best recorded work to date. The tunes are full of dreamlike harmonies, incisive guitars and mellotron washes. The likes of ‘She’s Taking Me Down’ and ‘Look to the Sky’ are always ambitious, inventive and highly melodic.” Phil Suggitt, Shindig! (UK) “It’s a mini album of six pieces of magical psychedelic sparkly dust. It is one that oozes class, and drips honeyed quality… It would be wrong to merely say that this transports you back to the sixties because it is also fresh, vibrant, and positively alive. Having said that, there is no doubt that sixties bands like The Byrds, The Beatles, and The Hollies knew how to write a catchy melody or two. Well somewhere along the line Paul Lake and Dave McLean have been busy soaking them up. In fact, I have an image of them eating piles of vinyl literally ingesting the best of the best before rowing out to their island on the Thames to lay down music of this quality.” Jeff Perkins, Eurorock (US)
