Bares's first CD as a leader, this jazz piano trio recording contains a personal storyline. The title track is a tribute to those who help us become more alive to signs (places, people, providence, divinity). “Afghanistan” is the earliest composition, written before the US invasion of Afghanistan. It foreshadows the turbulent years that form the backdrop of this album. “Once Was” is about forging a new relationship to painful past experiences. “Evanescent” is dedicated to all of the fleeting, beautiful moments in the first years of a romance. “Art’s Lullaby” was written for a mercurial firstborn when he was two. “Yin-Yang” is about the ups and downs of any relationship. “Blues for Leo” captures something of the power of a young boy's emotional states. Red Herring is a musical picture of our current era of misdirection and half-truths. “You Held the Light, I Found the Sign” reprises the album and is placed there as a hopeful tribute to those who shine light for us whenever the way seems unclear.
