Warm, compelling vocal arrangements and thoughtful lyrics highlight the bluegrass-tinged folk songs of Jaymie Gerard & The Burgs, revealing the project’s contemporary finger on the pulse of an evolving Americana genre. Beginning in 2011, songwriter Jaymie Gerard teamed up with fellow songwriter and husband Geb Zurburg, bassist and singer Andy Huenerberg, percussionist Jon Abate and engineer and producer Mod to create a project that would employ less production bells and whistles and more naked song performances. The result is “Flame and a Seed” by Jaymie Gerard & The Burgs. This ten-track collection includes eight songs written by Jaymie Gerard and two songs written by Geb Zurburg. The project developed amidst important personal life change, as during the course of recording this album a parent passed away and a child was born. Yet, those significant events led to a more thorough exploration of the potential of the songs and the fine-tuning necessary to capture a more minimalist and sincere sound. Certainly, “Flame and a Seed” is a departure from the more produced rock sound of Jaymie’s 2010 Double EP “Ain’t Life Sweet/Black Eyed Susans.” This album mixes banjos and dobros with guitars, bass and percussion, and most songs feature rising and falling three-part harmonies. Some tracks were reinterpretations of older songs – “Black Eyed Susans,” “Mistakes,” “Hey Jack” and “Feels Like Home” all appear on previous albums that Jaymie and Geb have released. However, on this album old songs take on a whole new life. Other songs make their debut, such as the title track and closer of the album, “Flame and a Seed.” It is a celebratory ending to the album and not the typical quiet introverted song that usually ends a folk album. “I’m Going My Way” and “Someone Else” also make their first appearances, and although they capture opposing moods, the two songs warmly complement each other. "Mistakes" is a thoughtful foot-stomper with lots of three-part harmonies, while "Good Intention Man" features the story of the tragic man of said name set to a banjo-driven, Americana feel. In "Traveling," listeners take a heart-felt tour of the USA with honest lyrics, slow, rhythmic guitar strumming and a sweeping harmonica.
