Refracted (artist alias for Berlin-based spanish producer Alex Eme) first came to our attention at RKT through his incredibly solid and mature release on nAX_Acids Aconito label, the Quantum State EP, in late 2012. It brought to light a very distinctive take on a rolling, hypnotic and immersive strain of techno, which kept sufficient variation even amongst its constituent tracks to lend the EP and the artist an identity that made them stand out. The idea to work with him was born immediately at that point, even before we were aware of his vinyl release on Silent Season in early 2013, the "Along A Ghostly Trail" EP. When that one came out, it easily became one of our favorite deep techno releases in a very long time. You can, then, imagine the measure of anticipation and excitement even amongst our ourselves, in bringing this release out. To that excitement, we might also add honor, because we know how much of himself Refracted had put into this release, the Convolution EP, the hard work, feeling and soul deposited in these 4 tracks. From the onset, it was partially his intention to show a more dancefloor-oriented side of his work, and a more incisive attitude, and we feel its perfectly achieved, while retaining the sense of beauty and mystery we already perceived in his previous works. These are 4 musical expressions of Convolution, both in sound and inner discovery and understanding. Convolution 1 is steady and assertive in its pace but gives away hints of questions to come with its filigree synths and windy pads, Convolution 2 is slow and patient but cautious, sounding like a restless and sinister undercurrent bubbling under an apparently beautiful and soothing surface. By Convolution 3, the music seems to breathe heavily under the pressure of its own disquiet, the bass pulling and pushing against the beat and a synth pattern recoiling and lunging forward like a snake. Convolution 4 certainly feels like the climax of the whole process, a psychedelic exorcism set to the sound of shimmering synths, hallucinated pads and tribal, contrapuntal drumming. All 4 tracks certainly seem to reach deep inside the mind and the soul and express a cathartic process in which music and movement are essential parts. In many ways, them, RKT and Refracted are kindred spirits in their understanding of techno as more than a soundtrack to hedonism. These factors make up what we feel is an essential landmark release in our catalogue.
