Roger was deeply affected by music from an early age. His most significant influences were the soul music of the sixties and the sweet vocal harmonies of artists like Seals and Croft, and Crosby, Stills, & Nash. While still in college, he and brother James (the one really gifted with musical talent according to Roger) began earnest work as a musical duo, playing guitars and producing their own sweet vocal harmonies. This was interrupted when James married, but several years later they were back together and formed their first band, the Cross Plains Band. This band played together with considerable local success for several years, released a single, and recorded original music at their studio before disbanding. After the untimely death of Cross Plains’ original drummer, Steve Zachariah Smith, Roger and James reunited, along with Roger’s wife Karen Sifton, to form the band Zachariah, which helped to raise money for a non-profit organization they set up, the Zachariah Foundation.

During this time, Gareth, Roger’s son, began his musical career by coming onstage with the Zachariah band and singing lead to a few songs, much to the audience’s pleasure. Gareth Asher (stage name, Asher being his middle name) has since made a life with his music, having a total of 5 albums as well as one with the group Illbreak in which he was the lead singer.

Roger and Karen, semi-retired from music after the breakup of Zachariah, continue to play with friends and at small venues for fun and charity. Inspired by Gareth’s zeal for his music, it was decided in early 2015 to record a number of Roger’s most recent original songs and dedicate them to Roger’s mom and brother James, who both passed away in 2014. Gareth and his talented lady, Madison Laughridge, are featured on several songs. The album has become known as The Only Dream and touches on the doubts, hopes, the fears and the Love that this being in a body brings.
