Backed by his live band and and with national airplay courtesy of BBC Radio 1xtra and BBC 6 Music to his name, northern rapper Nineties Boy has burst onto the music scene with big beats, a cheeky northern tongue and a live presence unlike anything else on the UK Hip Hop scene. Growing up in a decade that gave birth to the cultural phenomenon Brit Pop, Nineties Boy’s musical influences may be quite different to your stereotypical rapper. British bands were Nineties Boy’s music of choice and like the rest of the north of England, he was represented by Oasis in their battle against the London-based Blur. However, seeing the north and south of England fight it out for musical supremacy in the mid 90’s planted a thought in Nineties Boy’s head that is still there today. If Brit Pop represented Britain - why does Hip Hop only represent the south? Now, over the past year Nineties Boy has released three successful singles and gained recognition from southern based radio stations such as BBC 1xtra and BBC 6 Music; with the summer anthem ‘Get It On’ being selected by 6 Music’s Tom Robinson as a ‘Fresh Fave’ and featured on the BBC Introducing Mixtape. Still, even with these breakthroughs, you won’t find any northern rappers in the charts. Well, for now at least… With the release of his brand new EP Brit Hop and it’s lead single ‘Good Enough For You’ - a reworking of the iconic Brit Pop track ‘Good Enough’ - Nineties Boy is hoping to change that. After meeting and striking up a relationship with Dodgy - one of the pioneers of Brit Pop earlier this year at a music festival they were both performing at - Nineties Boy saw an opportunity. An opportunity to combine the genre he loved and the genre he loves. An opportunity to create Brit Hop. Fully endorsed by Dodgy and cleared by Universal Music Publishing, Nineties Boy is ready to unleash a brand new genre of music with his potential hit single ‘Good Enough For You’. Sure, Hip Hop only represents the south but much like Oasis and Brit Pop - Nineties Boy and Brit Hop will represent the north.
