Oh, and the rhythm is sublime ... bass run alone, and Steve rides it melodically and masterfully, hitting the occasional blue note, almost used in a jazz setting, but in this sound scenario it's almost gothic in a natural way. Whoever this Sandra is, she sure does inspire great work ! A couple of quite pleasant surprises in the production. ========================================== California (comments) serendipity XIII - collaboration station Another Steve Ison/Steve April collaboration, the former providing music, vocals and (most) instrumentation, the latter, some fine words. It's classed as '60s/70s West Coast pop, but to my ears, it's very British in a Housemartins way (which is a good thing, and before anyone says they were East Coast, yeah yeah yeah...). And I'm a real sucker for a cello, too. Great melody, deceptively simple lyrics, and it all comes together, despite the essential sadness of the story, to make a happy poppy whole [additional note, in response to some puzzled queries: the Housemartins, whose bass player was Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, and the lead person Paul Heaton, who went on to form the Beautiful South, are associated with Kingston-upon-Hull, on the east coast of England, and have nothing to do with Boston, Mass, NYC or elsewhere on the eastern seaboard of mainland north America] ________________________________________ Sound Stage Steve just seems to have a built in ability to put down great tunes at will. ______________________________________ ISONtopes Get your West Coast Cherry Popped by this new Ison tune... it doesn't always have to hurt, in fact, it can sound real good just like this does.
