Finer is Stacy and Ethan - married to each other and married to their music, and only that kind of crazy love can produce a sound as engaging, unapologetic, and free as the music they make. Finer’s distinct electronic pop rock sound came together when Stacy and Ethan met at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. They’ve been taking Stacy’s heartfelt, earthy vocals and guitar and Ethan’s unbelievable bass on the road ever since, touring up and down the East Coast, in the South, and throughout the mid-West. They detoured along the way so Ethan could teach jazz at IUPUI and play bass for Grammy winning Assad brother’s and family. Now they’ve sold their house, gotten rid of anything that wouldn’t fit in their car, and are taking it to you. There’s no place Finer would rather be, and they want you to come along. When the Indy-based electric rock duo took the stage at Natura Friday night, they demanded attention and filled the space with truly mesmerizing original music. Stacy Basner and Ethan James are not ones for the usual married life, having recently sold their house go on tour. They are amazing, down-to-earth people, completely devoted to each other and their music. That kind of passion is not something you can bottle and sell, but I certainly wish you could. The world would be a Finer place indeed. When I spoke with them, I felt like their outlook embodied how life should be – taking what you love to do and making it what you do. And their crazy tour makes perfect sense the moment you hear them. If Animal Collective and No Doubt had a jam session together, it might sound something like Finer, but probably not as cool. Stacy’s earthy and powerful vocals convey so much more than words alone. She creates a feeling and a place, and you immediately want to be there with her. Ethan’s bass solos were just stunning, and it was entrancing to watch him sink into the music; eyes closed, soul in every note. I have never seen an audience so captivated. Half of them were looking over as if to say “Are you seeing how incredible this is right now?” And the other half was gazing back with a firm “Yes.” Nobody was sure what it was exactly, but everyone wanted a piece of it. And I am absolutely certain the rest of the world will too. Finer is going to go far. “How much for a CD?” I ask after their set. “That’ll be four… hundred… dollars.” Stacy laughs as she puts a pile of shimmering merch in my hand. “No, really!” I persist unswervingly. “Okay, okay. That’ll be three… hundred dollars.” She says, pushing it back with a grin. “Keep on writing.”
