A jazzband mixing rock into their sound is old news. That has been done in the last 4 decades with both good and bad results. QUARTz, from funen, is one band that succeeds with this rhythmical melting pot, where the style of play, even in the confines of a single tune, can go from rock to jazz, and notably without disturbing the unified whole of the tune. This happens for example in Good Plön, where the highflying rockguitarsolo of Vedersø is followed by a more subdued flügelhornsolo, where the attentive rhythm section restrains itself in a fine way. The album does the quartet credit, and one listens with pleasure over and over again. The musicians play very well together and the solos are high level, but especially Mads la Cours playing is worth noticing. His ballad Miss Hugstable is a true joy to listen to, with flügelhornplaying that sounds exceptional and is a delight to the auditory canals. (Frank Büchmann Møller)
