“Mind’s Eye,” the third release by vocalist Kama Ruby, transports the artist from her straight ahead jazz roots into the musical genres of classic rock, adult contemporary, electronic chill, and even country music. The latter should not be that surprising considering that she grew up in Bakersfield, CA, the birthplace of the Bakersfield Sound. The result is an intriguing and eclectic mix of signature takes on some popular and rarely heard tunes from the past. Kama's first album “Kama Ruby, Straight-up & Chilled” and her sophomore album, "Kama Ruby: Rock Dreams in Jazz" are both a mix of jazz standards, acid jazz, classic rock, and pop tunes. The recordings capture the live feel of her performances and her unique take on familiar works. Both albums have enjoyed international sales as well as considerable airplay on numerous jazz oriented radio stations. On this newest album, Kama casts a musical net that embraces a wide variety of musical styles. For the first time, she has even ventured into country music with her interpretation of “Faded Love,” a tune made famous by the legendary “King of Western Swing” Bob Wills (who happens to also be a distant cousin). Hints of her influence by jazz and country show through clearly in her version of The Doors’ “Riders on the Storm,” with its haunting sax and woodwind solos as well as the blending of lyrics from Stan Jones’ classic western song, “Ghost Riders in the Sky.” Refusing to be pigeon-holed into any one genre, her chilled take on Moby’s “Mistake” - featuring long time David Bowie pianist, Mike Garson - as well as Zero 7’s “In the Waiting Line” are sure to become mainstays on electronic radio stations everywhere. Her love of past vocalists shows through as well with her versions of Joan Baez’ “Diamonds and Rust” and Janis Ian’s “Ride Me Like a Wave.” Finally, Kama’s take on the song “Treasure Island," featuring former America and Spyro Gyra drummer Tom Walsh, is highlighted by the piano and vocal skills of the legendary Jane Getz, who co-wrote the song with Jon Strider and co-produced the album.
