"Don't Look Back" is the second release from virtuoso electric bassist, Charles Berthoud. Once again, Charles manages to display his world-class technical mastery of the instrument, without ever diminishing the beauty of the compositions. But this time, everything is on a higher level. "Happy", is a wonderfully catchy number, making use of the loop station to build a pop-sounding arrangement that will have you dancing in your seat. Then we're taken to "Reflections", a solo piccolo bass piece that sounds a little like Michael Manring, before launching into the dark track, "Unstoppable". Next is the title track, "Don't Look Back". This is the never-before-heard studio version, and is a multi-bass arrangement that features a fretless bass solo by jazz bass master, Jim Stinnett. Two duets follow featuring Charles and Jim. "I Wanna Be", is a beautiful and delicate piece, while "One Winter Night" is an emotional ballad, almost hymn-like in its unhurried development and long melodies. Then comes a real treat in the form of "Ocean", a song written and performed by Grant Stinnett on vocals and guitar, with Charles's bass accompaniment. This is a powerful song about the empty feeling after losing a loved one. Charles and Grant go all out in displaying their instrumental prowess, in order to do justice to the message of this song. Finally, we are treated to "Luna", a piece that starts as a melancholy, rubato ballad. As it develops, the piece increases in energy, before ending in some of the fastest bass playing you'll ever hear, achieved through Charles's mastery of two-handed tapping. All the tracks were produced in stunning quality by Grant Stinnett. "Don't Look Back" is an incredible album showcasing a world-class bass player, and will appeal to any fans of beautiful, emotional and virtuosic instrumental music.
