Fred Anderson专辑介绍:by Scott YanowDespite this double CD's title, the music on the extended set (which clocks in at over two hours and 17 minutes) is not third-stream, an attempt to combine jazz with classical music or quiet dinner-hour music -- quite the opposite. Fred Anderson is a local legend in Chicago, an avant-garde tenor saxophonist with a large tone at times a little reminiscent of Gene Ammons, and is never afraid to take chances or push himself. The first disc matches him in a trio with bassist Tatsu Aoki and subtle drummer Afifi Phillard, while the second half of the set is comprised of eight Anderson/Aoki duets and two songs in which pianist Bradley Parker-Sparrow makes the group a trio. All of the numbers are group improvisations, but the results are far from random or chaotic. Anderson is not afraid to embrace a melody, or to play quite tonally and use repetition, space and rhythmic ideas. On the other hand, his playing is quite unpredictable, made a little accessible by his warm tone yet still very exploratory. The interplay between Anderson and Aoki, which is sometimes telepathic and quite often passionate, is the main reason to acquire this twofer, one of the legendary Fred Anderson's best recordings to date.
