‘Severance Package’ serves as the first mixtape release since UYIHLO’s unofficial mixtape series in 2018. The five years between that period have been brimmed by EP and single releases. During the aforementioned series, he had left his hometown of Gqeberha wet behind the ears, with a year and some change in Johannesburg. On ’Severance Package’, he delivers suave performances with more life experiences, and even more experience on the microphone. He boasts a formidable catalogue, and also understands the importance of prolific full length releases. He takes us through a journey of a young South African that uses a corporate life to fuel his dreams. As the name suggests, he has since parted ways with his corporate career to focus on his music one. He paints luscious images of expensive taste, tales of women, and the ever odd tales of growing into adulthood. “Job really wasn’t so bad, but I felt it was ****ing hell. Always thinking about how many albums I can sell” is what he laments on the intro. But by the time the project reaches the outro, he rejoices “Just the other year I was down and dead broke. Now when you visit, tlhoka access code.” Those opening and closing statements are a clear indication of what ‘Severance Package’ is about, a journey of despair and joy, and everything inbetween.
