Raw Pop-Rock. With catchy songs sure to get stuck in your head: Philo opted not to "track" their debut "Party EP" for the slick sound it could produce. All the instruments were recorded live in the same room with no isolation booths, bringing a fresh live feel that most recordings today would shy away from. Listening closely you can hear amps buzzing and slightly out-of-tune parts, they ditched the production gloss that could've made a sterile, run of the mill CD. It's that transparency and human quality that becomes quite endearing to the listener. If you haven't been out to see them, this is very much what they sound like live: a tight, fun rock n' roll band. You'll hear lots of anthem worthy choruses like in "Waiting" (a call-to-action song for the unmotivated), "Rock n' Roll Song" (a drinking anthem staple of the Trenton music scene) and "Good Song, Bad Ending" (perfect for that live-in-the-now, forget tomorrow kind of night). In contrast to the party theme but not straying from the sound there are melodic, lyrically mature songs like "Girl Down the Street" (tightly harmonized and well written, about the girl who's close but still so far) and "Waking Up" (the perfect song for your hangover with a sound like nothing you've ever heard) This CD can be listened to front to back without skipping a track. If you like one you'll like them all. Showing no fear of being different and taking sonic chances the listener may need a moment to adjust to the departure from the cookie-cutter sound of today but be rewarded with a simplistic well written album, still cool enough that your parents will hate it!
