Stephen Kakfwi was born at a traditional Dene bush camp on Yelta Lake, near Fort Good Hope, Northwest Territories. The outspoken former Northwest Territories Premier, Dene Nation President, and singer/songwriter Stephen Kakfwi, has adamantly fought for Aboriginal involvement in political and economical matters, as well as for the protection and preservation of Aboriginal culture and traditions. Along with this extensive political career, Kakfwi found time for one of his many passions: music. Kakfwi was told that people who play music should share their gift. With that advice in hand Kakfwi began sharing his songs with the public. Inspired by personal experiences, Dene leaders, and the land he grew up on Kakfwi now shares these "Songs of the Dene" on the release of "Spirit of Yamogha" On many of the cuts, Kakfwi’s narration provides the non Dene listener with context, understanding and a greater appreciation for Dene culture. The range of music moves through love songs, to prayer and prophecy “Two thousand years ago, at the time of Jesus, our people followed a star far into the Mountains and never came back. Someday, our people will come from the four directions and will be together again.” It is traditional Dene songs and drum dances, but with a quality that most have never heard before. Stephen Kakfwi, the dynamic and outspoken activist, political leader, Dene leader and singer/songwriter has not only made an impact within the government, but has also had a large impact on all aspects of the Aboriginal community as well as the rest of Canada.
