Blues, jazz and soul, combined or not combined but always from the heart. Suffering from a fairly unknown muscle disease, BigmamaDee will donate income from her repertoire to a research org . in Holland called the 'Prinses Beatrix Spierfonds' in hopes there will be more research possible and less people have to suffer like she does herself. BigmamaDee, born in 1970 in The Netherlands, fell in love with music as a toddler. At the age of 4 she loved to listen to opera and classical chamber music. At the age of 12 she played the recorder flute skilled enough to think about studying music. Initially she indeed studied classical music at the conservatory but due to a muscle disease she had to stop playing the flute. Yet, classical music became a useful tool for composing her own music- playing guitar and singing and writing her own lyrics. At first she composed mainly folk songs, playing guitar and bass and sang multi vocal layers which she recorded with a friend in her home studio, but slowly her mother's influence by playing a lot of blues, funk and jazz triggered the blues singer in her, BigmamaDee's main style is blues but loves to mix jazz with blues, blues with rock, and every now and then steps out of the box and brings some classical style and soul with progressive rock, or even blends soul in to Latin. Her love for music is too intense to only write and sing one style only, so together with the Colombian guitar virtuoso and composer Alfonso Llorente Sardi, with whom she had recorded a few songs on which she wrote the lyrics and composed the vocal melodies, she found a connection in both their search to create new styles. They have set up the 'ARCHAE' Project. Songs, with mixed styles, and featuring befriended artists. the result of ARCHAE's tracks may not be for a broad general audience, but for Bigmamadee, the mix of styles, blues with classical guitar, Latin with soul sang over it, have a deeper meaning : it's like how she has to cope from day to day- using a wheelchair to move forward, the hands of a caregiver or nurse to take a shower, using a robotic arm to help her own arm stir in a cooking pot.. a mix of everything and nothing to get to basis: life. And since ARCHAE, is the base of all cells living on the planet.. it fits with the cause she is selling her songs for. the mix of styles is a search for boundaries and represents the urge to grow and evolve for both BigmamaDee and Alfonso Llorente Sardi, but blues and jazz will always be her two favorite styles, and until the day comes she cannot sing anymore once her lung muscles or speech ability has declined too much, she will try to make music; the one thing that keeps her going.
