Recorded and Mixed at Desert Sky Studios, Joshua Tree, California by Clive Wright. c Desert Sky Music p African Grey Music (B.M.I) 2012 Spoke Album cover art created from a photograph taken by Георгий Корунов After making three albums with ambient music legend Harold Budd and three more solo live ambient albums, Clive Wrights very diverse, first studio album is here. A beautiful, unique and powerful album which appears to open doors into hidden worlds. Definitely not business as usual, Spoke takes you on a very diverse journey through its, at times, poignant but liberated moods. A listener passes from one realm to the next with a sense of evolution and forward motion. Snapshot descriptions of the track imagery would range from extraterrestrial operatic church, apocalyptic symphony, Hendrix 'in 1983 A Merman should I turn to be', romantic Moroccan desert caravans, and wind swept desert vistas, with soaring guitars evoking the voicing of David Gilmore or Jeff Beck. Track 7 'Timeless' features some distinctive keyboards from his friend Harold Budd, with his familiar warm swirls swimming behind Clive Wrights dreamlike Nylon String Guitars. Track Ten ,'You Should Know' features the hauntingly beautiful voice of Mariietta Rebekka from Berlin, with a purity reminiscent of Sarah Brightman . The title track 'Spoke' features intense, Hypnotic swelling pads and horn like voices weaving towering melodies and improvisations, here there is a certain raw emotion and attitude reminiscent of the Miles Davis 'B**ches Brew' period . One thing is indisputably evident from listening to Spoke, Clive Wright is truly a multifaceted musician who is able to draw from a varied life experience with music , In many revues of his solo live works, and the albums with Budd, he has been likened by reviewers to Robert Fripp. Apart from his obvious guitar virtuosity, which is at times very un-guitar like, he is also playing the middle eastern Oud, and Turkish cumbus saz on Spoke, which bring a welcome cosmopolitan, world flavor to some of the compositions. In addition, he is using common instruments such as bass guitar and keyboard synth in very expressive ways. unlike anything we have heard on his previous albums, or from his works with Harold Budd, there are a significant amount of tracks featuring electronic and acoustic drums and percussion, which launch Spoke into accessibility for a multitude of other genres apart from ambient electronica. Spoke is a significant step forward into new musical horizons from Clive Wright, but he carries with him the wealth of experience gained from the path taken so far.
