I put a lot of myself into this album. It came together rather quickly, but I think that's because I had a lot to say. I didn't necessarily mean for it to take on a concept, but it does evolve from one story to the next as if I had planned it that way. The first few songs on the album give you a taste of my influence from old school hip-hop. I grew up listening to artists like Biggie and Big L and they had a strong influence on my journey to becoming a musician. You can really hear that old school hip-hop flow on songs like Accolades and Right Track. The intro track, Comin' Up Fast, came to me one morning while I couldn't sleep, as most of my songs do. I wanted the intro track to be a short one that got right to the point. It doesn't waste time and gets right to the clever wordplay from the jump. I had a lot of fun making that song. High is probably the "single" from the album or at least it's the song people seem to like most. I wanted to encompass that feeling of letting go of the everyday stress and telling a story that's unique, yet relatable. Like This is a unique song that I really just did for fun one day. I was jamming some Post Malone and used that as the primary influence. I don't sing much, even though I grew up doing it, so this was a cool song to showcase my mediocre singing abilities. It was also my acknowledgement to the fans I've been slowly gaining and the realization that I never really thought I would have actual fans. Hold Up is where the album takes the turn. It's an immediate mood switch from light and fun to dark and ominous as I begin to question the basis of reality. I could talk about this forever, but I spend a lot of time questioning our reality and this song encompasses that while setting the mood for the rest of the album. You Think You Know is a shorter song that goes hand in hand with Hold Up. This song is the embodiment of my realization that as much as you think you might know about what's real and how the world works, you are normally completely in the dark about what's actually happening. The more you know, the more you realize you don't know. Slaves is my "diss" to the music industry. This song encompasses my frustrations with today's music and how blatant mediocrity and laziness is glorified more than those who put hours into perfecting their craft, as I do. Evolve is probably the song with the deepest message on the album. It's my question to our society/civilization asking when we will evolve from this state of disconnection and disunity and finally realize that we are all in this together. The outro track is unique. This was my song to really just let loose with the emotional and musical creativity. I never planned to put it on the album, but once it was done I realized that it was the musical representation of the entire album. There's no words, only music. It weaves this trail from calm and peaceful into beautiful chaos and back again, similar to how life does. Listen in the dark with headphones on.
