What is more magical than getting musicians together, calling tunes and recording the outcome? That is what happened with Detroit Jam. Two afternoon sessions were booked, tunes were called, playing format was discussed, but the tunes were not rehearsed. Just roll tape! This remarkable cast of musicians with well over 200 years of performing and recording experience collectively threw out names of tunes and keys and started to play. Best of all, having played together in thousands of various musical performances, this group had never played together as a group prior to these sessions. This is a first time event, and the results speak for themselves. The group features Yamaha trombone artist Ron Kischuk on trombone and as leader, Johnny Trudell on trumpet & flugelhorn, Gary Schunk on piano, Marion Hayfen on bass, Gayelynn McKinney on drums and Judie Cochill on vocals.

This is truly jazz in it’s most basic form. Harmonies were chosen instinctively, endings performed on the fly, intros dished out and solo orders sometimes planned, sometimes not. Of particular interest is all of the interplay going on throughout the sessions. How great it is to hear musicians playing with each other and creating both from what they know and what they hear going on around them. This is in stark contrast to many recordings where the musicians merely perform for each other, playing only what it is they have specifically practiced, rehearsed and know. It is the rare group of musicians who are confident enough to be so vulnerable and creative at the same time, daring to document their collective musical efforts in real time. This is the basis that jazz music was founded upon, but one that is rarely attempted anymore. That is really unfortunate, as the jam session format has produced some of the greatest jazz recordings of all time.
