CATHERINE POTTER - DUNIYA PROJECT is a dynamic world music ensemble which centers on the interconnectedness between musical expressions from here and afar. With a strong emphasis on North Indian music, original compositions faithfully render the intricate beauty of Indian ragas while creating jazzy atmospheres and enticing rhythms with forays into flamenco, funk and gamelan. DUNIYA PROJECT is the fruit of bansuri player Catherine Potter’s long musical journey between Montreal and Mumbai where she has trained in North Indian classical music under the celebrated Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia for nearly 20 years. Now widely considered “Canada’s master bansuri flautist”, Catherine Potter has also confirmed her place in the international world music stage with her unique hybrid approach to composition. Duniya, meaning ‘world’ in several languages, evokes both the global flavour of the music and the bringing together of outstanding core musicians and guests from varied musical backgrounds performing in diverse permutations. Jorge Martinez on flameco guitar, Nicolas Caloia on double-bass, Vineet Vyas on tabla and Thom Gossage on drums. Previous guests have included Palestinian oud player, Simon Shaheen, tabla-player, Subhankar Bannerjee, and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. DUNIYA PROJECT has performed to acclaim at key stages across Canada (Montreal International Jazz Festival, Ottawa International Jazz Festival, Guelph Jazz Festival, Festival du Monde Arab, Toronto\'s South Asian Music Fest, to name a few) and several of their concerts have been featured on Radio-Canada and CBC Radio-Two. The troupe has recently completed an exciting international tour with 13 concerts in Europe and India, including performances at Kolkata\'s Congo Square Jazz Festival, Bangalore’s East-West Encounter Festival and Mumbai’s National Centre for the Performing Arts.
