I think the most powerful way to express emotion is through the combination of words and music. The rhythm of the words and the pathway of the melody, traveling along with instruments, create a resonance in the listener. It's a way to give voice to perceptions and feelings that are otherwise inexpressible. I believe music can save lives - in my case I think my life has been not only enriched but actually preserved numerous times by the work of many musicians, especially singer-songwriters. Songwriting is a passion, a calling, a commitment. It requires the courage to spill your guts to strangers. It can overcome all the rules and conventions of society. A song can connect you to the universe, to your own heart, to the hearts and experiences of others, and to nature. The simplest songs can be the most profound. The struggle to live up to these challenges - to write songs like those by other songwriters that have opened my eyes and my heart - has been a major feature of my life.
