This is an excerpt from an on air interview at an Atlanta Radio Station: Interviewer: Thank you for doing this interview. Rod Young: You are quite welcome. Int: Let’s talk about your new release 'Atlanta Chilled' tell me about it. Rod Young: It's a fresh approach to Jazz music. Not new, but an innovation of a "modal' style of Jazz rarely played today. Atlanta Chilled is a collection of songs that reflect the life and emotions of the people of Atlanta. The music reflects reality, from the daily grind of the city life to the complex night life. Atlanta Chilled is a musical adaptation of the hearts and minds of the people of Atlanta from Midtown to Spaghetti Junction, from the traps in the hood to the so called intellectual elite. My challenge with "Atlanta Chilled" was to create emotional timeless music that reflects the city. Int: You speak on this album about the "gift of seeing sound" what is that? Rod Young: Most people don't realize that a painter like Van Gough or Renoir start with a blank canvas but in their minds they already know what the painting will look like before they make a single brush stroke. Seeing sounds is a gift that is similar but my blank canvas is silence. I know all the sounds in a song before I play a single note. I have been told this is a rare gift but I believe we all have the ability to see sounds. Int: Has this always been your approach to creating music? Rod Young: Yes. This has always been my approach to songwriting and music composition. I always start with a great respect for silence. Any instrument can be the next thing in the mix. I may create a melody with the piano, a rhythm with the drums, or the low frequency support with the upright bass. Anything can come after silence. A perfect example of seeing sounds is the song 'Bass Run' on the Deluxe Eden CD. I started and ended with the Upright Bass with new layers of sound added every 16 bars. Int: Who would you consider your musical idols? RY: I have always been a big fan of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Their music is beautiful, complete, and each song tells a story from beginning to end. I like Bill Evans because of his amazing melodies, his creativity, and how his piano performances are a window into his soul. There are many more but I will just stop now before this becomes a 3 day radio interview. Int: You have a significant following on the Internet but it doesn't translate to the mainstream. Why is that? Rod Young: I'm really not sure. I think people who listen to my first CD "Deluxe Eden" have an understanding that my music is not mainstream but is intellectually satisfying and not disposable music. I think that people who seek good music through the internet radio and stations like Pandora will ultimately hear one of my songs and wonder who that artist is. I am patient and can wait for the masses to come on their own terms. Int: You originally released a CD called Eden on another label. Why are you re-releasing it as a part of "Atlanta Chilled" on a double CD release? RY: Well Eden was not a full length CD. It had only 8 songs when originally released. My first label thought it was great with just 8 songs. While Internet sells were good enough to justify their decision, I always believed that 8 songs were not enough. So I added 5 more songs to give it a full CD feel but added it as a bonus CD to the "Atlanta Chilled" project so purchasers of "Atlanta Chilled" would get more than their money’s worth. Int: In your Bio you mentioned a deal you made with a piano playing Janitor at Louisiana Tech University to "Keep quiet to keep playing" but you never mentioned that Janitors name why? RY: He may still be there. Int: What do you want people to take away for "Atlanta Chilled" after listening to it? Rod Young: Well first I want them to listen to it more than once because it is impossible to hear everything the first time. The most interesting thing I have heard is that every song on "Atlanta Chilled" will sound different based on your mood, the time of day you listen, and even where you listen (car, work, or home). What I want people to take away is the freshness of the sound. I want people who are not from Atlanta to have a clear and concise picture of the Atlanta I know. Finally I want people who appreciate Jazz to say to themselves "wow that's new". For more information go to www.KnowRodYoung.com
