The CCC performs new and existing Canadian choral works, apprentices choral conductors and facilitates workshops in all sizes of Canadian communities in every part of the country. Under the artistic direction of Julia Davids, the CCC is committed to the celebration and development of choral excellence in all regions of Canada. The CCC’s founding artistic director, Montréal conductor Iwan Edwards, CM, was instrumental in leading and mentoring the choir through its formative years. Since 2004, the ensemble has been under the baton of Julia Davids, passionate vocal pedagogue and champion of Canadian repertoire. Guided by a dedicated volunteer board of directors, the CCC continues to share its gifts with the country as Canada’s national chamber choir. Her book with co-author Stephen LaTour, Vocal Technique – A Guide for Conductors, Teachers, and Singers published by Waveland Press, was honoured with Choral Canada’s award for best choral publication. Julia is the Stephen J. Hendrickson director of choral activities and associate professor at North Park University Chicago where she directs the University Choir and the Chamber Singers, and teaches music education and conducting. Julia is a proud founding member of the Canadian Chamber Choir and has served as its artistic director since 2004. JOEL TRANQUILLA, ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR Noted for his versatile musicianship and creative programming, Joel Tranquilla is director of choral activities and assistant professor at Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia. Before joining the faculty at TWU, Joel lived and worked in Windsor, Ontario, where he served as chorus master of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, artistic director of the Windsor Classic Chorale and conductor of the University of Windsor Women’s Chamber Choir. A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Joel holds degrees from Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, and Mount Allison University as well as ARCT diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music in both piano and voice performance. A proud alumnus of the National Youth Choir of Canada, Joel was its 2012 apprentice conductor. In 2013 he was named the emerging artist of the year at the Ontario Premier’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Joel has been a member of the Canadian Chamber Choir since 2007 and was appointed associate conductor of the ensemble in 2014. He has won a number of composition competitions and has had his music performed across North America, as well as in Ireland, the U.K. and Japan. He has received commissions from various choral groups across Canada such as Halifax Camerata (Nova Scotia), Xara Choral Theatre (Nova Scotia), Conrad Grebel College (Ontario), Saskatoon Chamber Singers (Saskatchewan), University of Alberta Madrigal Singers (Alberta), Spiritus Chamber Choir (Alberta) and Vox Humana Chamber Choir (British Columbia). He is currently music director at St. James Lutheran Church in Elmira, Ontario, and maintains a private teaching studio and gives lessons in violin and viola at the Beckett School in Kitchener. Jeff Enns has been a member of the Canadian Chamber Choir since 2008, and he also sings with the Elora Festival Singers. Throughout history the mass has evolved from chanted settings for liturgical use in worship, to include much more elaborate settings, many written as large-scale concert pieces. Canadian composers from coast to coast have written their own musical settings, which reflect the diversity of our country. We have selected from this wide array of movements, and in between them we have included other reflective sacred pieces. From well-established to emerging composers, our Canadian mass showcases the depth, talent, and diversity of Canadian composers. Barrie Cabena is a noted organist and composer with over 400 compositions to his credit. He was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1933 and studied at the Royal College of Music in London where Herbert Howells was among his teachers. He moved to London, Ontario, to become music director at First St. Andrew's Church and a Canadian citizen in 1966. In 1970, he joined the department of music at Wilfrid Laurier University to teach organ and church music. As a composer, Cabena is perhaps best known for his well-crafted short sacred choral works, including a set of three motets from which Be still and know that I am God is taken; published by Gordon V. Thompson in 1978, it is now out of print. Be still, and know that I am God. I wait for the Lord with all my soul, I hope for the fulfillment of his word. My soul waits for the Lord more eagerly than watchmen for the morning. Like men who watch for the morning. O Israel, look for the Lord! The profound simplicity of Silence is indicative of her keen interest in the beauty of natural environments; it is published by Waterloo Music. In times of quietness our hearts should be like trees lifting their branches to the sky. The stars are silent, flowers do not sing; But stars fill all the night with light more beautiful than sound. God’s blessings fall upon us wordlessly, eternal as the quiet passing of the sun. Nickel wrote Requiem for Peace as his doctoral thesis at the University of British Columbia. It is an extensive work for soloists, chorus and orchestra in 12 languages, and it recently received its European premiere in Stockholm, Sweden. The Kyrie is rich and poignant with suspensions that illustrate the pleading of the text; it is published as an individual movement by G.Schirmer, Inc., and as part of Requiem for Peace by Cypress Choral Music. Also an active organist and conductor, Allan is currently director of music at Rosedale Presbyterian Church, Toronto. Beautiful melodies and satisfying part-writing are trademarks of Bevan’s choral music. Tobin Stokes (b. 1966) is a composer of music for the stage, screen and concert hall. His fifth opera, Pauline was premiered by City Opera Vancouver in 2014. The libretto by Margaret Atwood tells the story of Canadian poet Pauline Johnson’s final days. Other recent works include film scores for the BBC and works for the Victoria Symphony. Tobin, who studied percussion at the University of Victoria, has a keen sense of dramatic timing. This can be heard in the shifting meters and energetic text setting of his Gloria!, which received an honourable mention in the DaCapo Chamber Choir’s Composition Competition in 2012. Enns has written numerous choral compositions for school, church, amateur and professional choirs, published in Canada and the United States. His works are performed at festivals and concerts across North America, England, and continental Europe. He is the founding director of the DaCapo Chamber Choir and was on the music faculty at Conrad Grebel University College. Credo is the central movement of his Missa Brevis, which won the 1998 Ruth Watson Henderson Choral Composition Competition and was premiered by the Elmer Iseler Singers in 1999. AVE MARIA – ROBERT INGARI (Sherbrooke, Que./Qc) Robert Ingari (b. 1962) is the Director of Choral Activities at the Université de Sherbrooke where he has developed a unique and innovative French-speaking master’s degree program in choral conducting. Since January 2011, Ingari has been the artistic director of the Chœur de chambre du Québec, a 17-voice professional ensemble devoted to the interpretation, creation and recording of vocal works, principally in French including compositions by Ingari himself. Ave Maria, written in 2000 and revised in 2013, took its initial inspiration from the first measures of Anton Bruckner’s setting of the same prayer. It is self-published. As artistic director of Pax Christi Chorale since 1996, Martin has led this 85-voice choral group in memorable performances of the great works of the oratorio repertoire. She served as music director of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Toronto for six years where she composed many works for the resident women’s chant group, Schola Magdalena. His output includes notable choral, orchestral and chamber works often rooted in traditional or folk material, and he has received commissions from performers such as the Elmer Iseler Singers, the Canadian Piano Trio and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. His setting of Psalm 23, an example of his highly accessible choral style, is published by Cypress Choral Music. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. Kathleen Allan (b. 1989), who received a degree in composition from the University of British Columbia, has since completed a master’s degree in conducting at Yale University, and was appointed director of the junior choir at St. Michael’s Choir School in Toronto. Equally at home as an accomplished singer and conductor, Kathleen served as the CCC’s conducting fellow in 2013. In paradisum is published as part of the Canadian Chamber Choir Series by Cypress Choral Music. About the piece, she writes: “A highly personal work, it was written during my first year in Vancouver and was inspired by my first encounters with the beautiful Pacific coast. Having grown up in a harsher coastal climate on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, I was struck by the calmness and serenity of Vancouver's seaside. I was inspired to write a poem in honour of my grandfather, an amateur sailor and photographer, who at the time was beginning to succumb to his chronic lung disease in St. John's. Writing the poem and setting it to music helped me to reconcile the distance between my homes on two coasts, and allowed me to musically express my awe at natural beauty, my grappling with transitions, life and loss, and the profound sense of hope the ocean, regardless of coast, represented to me.” A breath of sunset, a snap shot of fresh air is framed in memory.
