Dalla - K5 The traditional Celtic music of Cornwall, UK. Cornwall, jutting out into the Atlantic halfway between Ireland and Brittany, stands at the sharp end of the island it shares with Scotland, Wales, and England. Cornwall’s surprisingly strange, yet strangely familiar music has its roots in ancient British/Celtic culture, but also buzzes with a host of other influences swept in by the surrounding tides. At the cutting edge of Cornish music is Dalla. With their firm grounding in the tradition, their pivotal position at the heart of the revival, and their wealth and diversity of experience, it’s easy to see why Dalla ‘have the edge’. Dalla are the foremost proponents and internationally renowned ambassadors of Cornish traditional music. 'K5' is the fifth album from Dalla. Dalla’s albums have received many rave reviews and achieved international acclaim, and they have also ‘taken their music to the people’ with countless performances abroad. The members of Dalla have performed Cornish traditional music on stages throughout the United States, Canada, Scandinavia, most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Far East. But, as Dalla’s Neil Davey says: “Although I feel very fortunate to have been able to travel to so many amazing places through music, at the end of the day it is my homeland Cornwall which amazes and inspires me most, and which inspires the greatest love. Our music is always rooted in this love for Cornwall and her culture, and above all else, our music is really a love song for Cornwall, a love which we want to share with the rest of the world.” The title of this fifth album ‘K5’ is short for ‘Kabm Pemp’ – Cornish language for ‘Step Five’ and also the name of one of our favourite Cornish dance rhythms, the ‘Cornish Five-step’. It is also a reference to the fact that there are now five Dalla members: Neil Davey (Bouzouki, Mandolin, Fiddle, Vocals), Hilary Coleman (Vocals, Clarinets), Bec Applebee (Vocals, Percussion, Whistle), Jen Dyer (Viola, Vocals) and Kyt Le Nen Davey (Accordian, Mandola, Whistle). Jen Dyer and Kyt Le Nen Davey were guests on Dalla’s previous album ‘Cribbar’. K5 also features guest musicians: Will Coleman (Gaita Galego – the Galician bagpipes now popular in Cornish music), Jim Carey (Bass drum) and Piers Lewin (Whistle and Low Whistle). The music includes songs in Cornish and in English, songs of joy and of heartbreak, and the dazzling multi-layered multi-instumental dance tunes and arrangements which fans of Dalla know so well. The music includes previously unheard material as well as favourites from Dalla’s live performances. Other albums by Dalla: A Richer Vein (2001), More Salt (2004), Rooz (2007) and ‘Cribbar’ (2010) What others say about Dalla: ‘The rhythmic, mesmerizing music of Cornwall is finally gaining recognition among noteworthy traditions of the British Isles thanks to groups like Dalla.'
