The band's hook-happy, smart-ass pop is much tighter and better focused on this set, and while Ed Masley had a handful of really good songs on his first album, here he has a few great ones on deck. "If She Were My Girl" is a thoroughly delightful power pop love song (with the memorable line "If she were my girl/I would get a second job!"). "She's Posing Nude" and "I'm in Love With the Label Rep" are amusing meditations on the pitfalls of romance, "Like an Oliver Stone" skewers the cult of '60s worship with appropriate cynicism, and "You Didn't Have to Listen" is a surprisingly serious (and non-clichéd) look at the nature of racism. A solid and winning album that deserved a lot more attention than it received.
