It is saxophonist Aaron Bennett's first solo CD (he has already played with Wadada Leo Smith and John Butcher, among others). This set contains four untitled solo soprano saxophone improvisations, a sax/voice duet ("Duet") with Kattt Sammon, and a "Concerto for Soprano Sax and Audience." The solo pieces are the most interesting. They show Bennett's extensive range of techniques and influences, and his attraction to melodies, even in a free improv context. One recognizes two very different influences in his personal voice: Steve Lacy and Evan Parker. The former's melodic flair is blended with the latter's circular breathing and overall energy output. Kattt Sammon brings interesting ideas to "Duet" and the let's-try-unison game the improvisers play becomes entertaining, but her voice is often lost behind the saxophone. For the "Concerto for Soprano Sax and Audience," toy instruments were supplied to audience members. Bennett gets his "cadenza" halfway through; otherwise, he encourages people to blow into plastic flutes and bang on toy percussion. Live at Luggage is a statement of Bennett's personal approach to creative saxophone music. It reveals a good improviser who is not afraid of being funny if he chooses.
