Tropico BLVD is a musical group formed by Daniel Dean & Miguel Lantigua in Sarasota, FL, and later relocated to Brooklyn, NY. They identify as pop rock but are often influenced by latin, folk, jam, bluegrass, reggae, punk, RnB, zydeco, afro jazz, and hip-hop, often incorporating mashups, call-responses and vocal rounds in their performances. The band loves to improvise, adopting the "Jam Band" form of long sets, jams and musical segue. Dean and Lantigua have named The Police, Andrew Bird, John Lennon, David Bowie, The Grateful Dead, and Frank Zappa as among Tropico BLVD's key influences. The pair have written with many local musicians in the Gulf Coast music scene, developing jams that would be later become Tropico songs. In 2015, after their move to NYC, they record their first EP, It's Gonna Be a Good Day, a title taken from one of the first songs they played together. The band was backed by the rhythm section of the Brooklyn indie rock outfit Natural Stranger, musicians Josh Handford and JT Paz. Good Day was recorded in three days, engineered by Nathan Curry and mixed by Lantigua and Jordan Withers. The album mixes heavy lyrics with themes of artistic struggle, losing one's self and losing one's mind, as well as hope for a better future. Tropico BLVD is currently available to perform shows and is writing a new album to begin production Summer 2016.
